Oxygen (O2) is extensively used across wide range of industries. It is estimated that 55% of all commercially produced oxygen is consumed in smelting of iron ore into steel. It is injected into molten iron for removal of sulfur impurities and carbon excess as respective oxides, SO2 and CO2. Chemical industry consumes 25% of industrially produced oxygen for creating ethylene oxide which is converted into ethylene glycol, the main material for making numerous products including antifreeze and polyester polymers. The remaining 20% of commercially produced oxygen is used in medical applications, metal cutting and welding, water treatment, etc.
